Desserts and drinks

Fruit is a good option for dessert and another chance to get one of your 5 a day.

Desserts

  • Consider having a hot drink instead of dessert
  • A coffee or hot chocolate with low fat milk is likely to be lower in fat and sugar than ice cream or cake
  • If you are having dessert, perhaps consider having some "dessert free days" later on in the week

Drinks

  • Sugar-free or reduced sugar squash is a tasty alternative to full sugar options
  • Swap sugary fizzy drinks for diet fizzy drinks. After a while, you could swap the diet fizzy drinks for water or a low-sugar squash
  • Swap milkshake drinks for skimmed or semi-skimmed milk
  • If you drink dairy free alternatives such as almond or soy milk, picking a lower fat or sugar option is a healthier choice
  • If you add sugar or syrup to hot drinks such as tea and coffee, think about cutting down how much you add, or how often
  • Swap sugary alcoholic drinks such as liqueurs, alcopops and flavoured ciders, and mixers, for lower-sugar alternatives
  • Swap alcoholic drinks for low or alcohol free drinks

Each of us should drink 6-8 glasses of fluid each day. It’s better if this is mainly water, but tea and coffee also count.
