Packaged foods

Packaged foods can be an easy option when busy - there are ways to eat them in a heathier way.

If you do buy packaged foods that are higher in fat, salt or sugars, there are some ways to make them a little healthier
  • A carton of passata or a tin of chopped tomatoes mixed into your jar of sauce will go twice as far. It will also be lower in fat, salt and sugar
  • Many jars of sauce, tins of soups and beans and ready meals will have vegetables (or fruit) in them. Check the label and choose one with more added fruit & veg
  • Stretch meals out by adding more fruit & vegetables, for example to a ready meal or pizza
  • Choose a healthier side dish – have boiled rice with your microwave curry main dish instead of pilau rice

For busy parents packaged foods are often the easiest option.
