Making meals and snacks healthier

Recipes are just a guide, the ingredients don't always need to be followed exactly.

There are thousands of family friendly recipes out there. However, it can be difficult to have all of the ingredients a recipe requires
  • Recipes can be easily tweaked to suit your family’s needs and tastes
  • Ingredients can be swapped for others, or more or less of something added, depending on what you have got in the cupboard

Don’t be put off if you don’t have all of the herbs, spices or other ingredients – it probably won’t make much of a difference and you might like your version better!

If you don’t have exactly what you need, remember that most recipes are just a guide.

  • You might have something in the cupboard or fridge you can use instead – use this as a chance to make it your way
  • Look in your cupboards, fridge and freezer to see what you have and what you need to use up
  • Getting everyone involved can help. Children might be more likely to eat a meal if they help choose and prepare it
  • Tweaking your favourite meals or recipes can give you and your family new options to try
  • There will be some trial and error, but trying new things is a great start

The rules around cooking are a little different to baking. When baking it is recommended to follow the ingredients and instructions as closely as possible!
