Online shopping

Online shopping can be a simple way to get your groceries without visiting the supermarket.

  • A lot of the big supermarkets in Scotland now offer online ordering and delivery
  • Even if you live in a flat up a few flights of stairs, some supermarkets will still deliver straight to your door
  • By shopping online you can avoid the drive or bus ride to the shop, and having to take the kids with you
  • Usually, you can do your shop with the supermarket app, or on their website, when it suits you

Booking a delivery in advance, or at less busy times, means you can pay as little as £1 for each delivery.

If online supermarket shopping is an option for you:

  • You can take your time with your shopping and come back to your order later if you need to
  • You can check your cupboards, fridge and freezer for what you need
  • The app or website makes it easier to pick the same items as you bought last time
  • You could try online shopping once a month to begin with, then change to weekly if you are getting on well

Shop online and save money

  • You don’t have to walk past the foods that are not on your list
  • You might avoid buying the foods you don’t need
  • The kids won't be able to pester you to add things to the trolley
  • You will know how much you have spent before you reach the checkout, helping you stay within budget
  • Delivery passes (for a few months or a year's delivery) can make delivery cheaper if you can pay up-front
  • If you don’t want to pay for delivery, many supermarkets offer a free ‘click and collect’ service, where you order online and pick up at the store
  • The discounter supermarkets don't offer online shopping yet, but you could still use online shopping once in a while for heavier items or brands you like

All supermarkets are different, so you could check out different options online or ask at customer service.

For extra support with online shopping you could ask friends or family for help. Having someone show you how to do your first order will give you confidence. After a few practices the process will become simpler
